This significant statement ignited
faith and hope within Kendall for America’s
future. The idea needed only a spark and that
was it.
On the plane back to Nashville Kendall began
to wonder, “If I don’t know the
extraordinary story of America, then how many
others don’t know it as well, and what
does this mean for future generations? If these
words have had such an impact on me, what would
happen if I could help share them with a Nation
that has forgotten what they mean?” And
the “what if’s” began:
- What if we could place Jefferson’s
timeless words on billboards across America?
- What if we could bring leaders from all
centers of influence in our culture to walk
in the footsteps of our Founding Fathers in
our Nation’s capital?
- What if we placed a book of quotes from
our Founding Fathers in the hands of every
schoolchild in America?
- What if we could launch a nationwide mass
media campaign designed to create a national
dialogue about how faith in God impacts the
destinies of nations.
- What if we created a home on the web where
people—from scholars to grade schoolers—could
themselves uncover the forgotten foundations
of our country from original and unbiased
sources?
As our spiritual heritage is either forgotten
or re-told by revisionists, our foundations
are being chipped away. If our foundations are
destroyed America cannot stand. But how can
we restore our foundations if we don’t
know what they are?
We are like children who have inherited our
great, great grandfather’s fortune. Many
do not know from where the money comes, nor
what it took to earn it, or how best to steward
it. To be honest we may not even know the names
of our great, great grandfathers. Could it be
that we have used our inheritance to construct
a theme park by the sea, where we ride the roller
coasters and eat the cotton candy? Have we become
oblivious to the fact that, although there is
nothing wrong with a nice theme park by the
sea, if we neglect the foundations upon which
it was built it will crumble into the ocean?
A recent survey conducted by the research department
at the University of Connecticut revealed that
over 80 % of the senior students in 55 of the
top universities of the United States, including
Harvard and Princeton, received a "D"
or an "F" on a simple 34-question
American History test. Over 90 % could name
MTV's Beavis, but not the Father of the Constitution.
One of those working on the project said, "these
students are being allowed to graduate as if
the past never existed." If we are not
learning America's history, then we surely are
not learning America's Christian history. Consider
these comments from history in light of the
state of our nation:
- "It is the duty of all nations to
acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God."
George Washington
- "Whenever a people or an institution
forgets its hard beginnings, it is beginning
to decay."
Carl Sandburg
- "A people without a heritage are easily
persuaded."
Karl Marx
So what do we do? We can embrace this grand
dream entrusted to our care and protect and
preserve the foundations of America for our
children’s children. The choice is ours.
We have chosen not to allow future generations
to be robbed of their heritage.
